I was the only female manager—and the youngest—in Japan’s male-dominated automotive industry. I didn’t belong.⁠

So, I tried to lead like the men around me—like a Japanese man, to be exact. No emotions, no vulnerability, just a tough exterior.⁠

I never thought becoming a ‘Wedding Crasher’ would be part of my expat survival toolkit, but sometimes you have to create connection, no matter how unconventional.

Here’s the thing about living in 5-star hotels in India—there are a lot of weddings. When you’re living in that bubble, especially as an expat, you’ve got two choices: watch from the sidelines or dive in.

When I was in Kolkata, married to a hotelier with a toddler and newborn, I lived in a 5-star hotel. It sounds glamorous, but I felt like a bird in a gilded cage. The city wasn’t stroller-friendly, and getting around? Impossible.

So, I became a “Wedding Crasher”. Yes, I started slipping into weddings, making connections, and breaking out of isolation. I’m not suggesting you crash a wedding (unless you’re feeling adventurous!), but the point is that connection doesn’t just happen—you have to create it.

Practical Ways to Build Connection:

If wedding crashing isn’t your thing (understandable), here are other ways to connect:

➊ Join a Club: Clubs are great for community. I’m a member of the @clubofunitedbusiness in Australia, which gives me reciprocal rights to clubs globally. Other clubs I’ve either been part of or that come highly recommended are in the comments.

➋ Say Yes More Often: Show up, even when you don’t feel like it. Whether it’s a community event, a coffee meeting, or an industry gathering—just say yes, even when you’re tempted to stay home. The best conversations happen when we least expect them.

➌ Deepen Existing Friendships: It’s not about how many people you know, but how deeply you connect. Invest in your current relationships. Pick up the phone, invite someone for a long walk, or just send a heartfelt message to an old friend. These deep relationships will keep you grounded.

Your social health is just as important as your physical and mental well-being.

Whether it’s crashing a wedding or building connections in a club, finding your people can change everything.
